Homemade Corn Tortillas


  • 2 cups masa harina*
  • 1 cup water


Mix masa with waterin a large mixing bowl according to package directions. Knead for 1 minute. Form into 12 balls each about 1-1/2'' in diameter. Cover with plastic wrap.

Heat a griddle or heavy skillet over high heat. For each tortilla, place one ball inside a plastic bag. Press into a 4-inch circle using a plate or a tortilla press. Reduce the heat to medium. Cook one tortilla at a time for 30 seconds on one side, turn and cook 1 minute on other side. Turn again and cook for a few seconds, remove to warm plate. Repeat.

*NOTE: Masa harina is sold in the baking section of supermarkets with flours and baking ingredients. Masa harina is not the same as cornmeal. Cornmeal cannot be substituted for masa. Masa harina is a ground corn mixture combined with lye.
